RESETTING/PHANTASANA (CURTAIN FALLS)

This installation centers around a large ink drawing in the form of a triptych which provides a view of a circus arena. Mounted elephants peform well executed tricks before the eyes of the tamer. On his behalf they stand on dressage stools which give the animals a strange kind of artificiality. While the left side panel depicts an empty stand in a park setting, the panel on the right shows a crowd of spectators in front of a simulation of a town. Several elements from the drawings have been transferred to the exhibition space as 3D objects. Training stools like the ones featured in the circus program with the elephants replace the normal furniture of the room. A curtain which alludes to the stripes of the big top was installed over the entire window area. Consequently, the gallery has been turned into an arena which should function like an accessible drawing. The artist refers to the university as a place of education and discipline, inviting the students to take a seat on the stools and ponder their conditioning by the institution. (Developed originally for the exhibition space of Webster University Vienna.) 2008.
